- Day 871
- Teleport to Nightfort
- The party goes to the tavern and provide donations to the Watch.
- They spend the night.
- Day 872
- Before leaving in the morning, they meet with the Lord Commander.
- He tells them that Phryd spoke to him about Myke and tells the party:
- This is good news. I am inclined to just make this official then. We’ve got plenty to deal with right now.
- While I appreciate your intuition in recognizing Myke’s potential as a commander, it’s important to remember that our decisions must be based on more than just a feeling. We need to gather all available information and consider the consequences of our actions before making a choice.
- In war and leadership, sometimes our instincts lead us down the right path, but sometimes they can lead us astray. It’s important to balance our gut feelings with careful analysis and planning.
- Don’t forget that leadership involves more than just issuing orders. A good commander must also be able to listen, communicate effectively, and inspire their troops. It sounds like Myke is up to this task.
- I’ll write up the formal appointment letter, but you’ll need to keep an eye on him and make sure he’s living up to the responsibilities that come with the job.
- He hands them a small scrolled letter for Myke, closed with the Lord Commander’s seal.
- The party opens a portal to the Ioun Cavern and inserts the pink rhomboid stone into the appropriate pillar and fight an 8-headed Hydra.
- After killing it, they pick up the upgraded Ioun Stone and set up their hut.
- They see a portal opens without their attempt. No one steps through. Their angle prevents them from seeing through.
- They use telekinesis to toss a lot of the white Ioun crystal rubble through to the other side and covered the entire portal area with random rocks and rubble. They hear nothing.
- Day 873
- They finish their long rest and Teleport to just outside the Wildling camp that keeps Grand (Lord Pepperworth’s friend) prisoner.
- They hand over the Ioun Stone to Harry, their leader, which doesn’t seem to work anymore for the wildlings. They presume it is fake.
- The party tells them to attune to it be accuse they made it better.
- Being skeptical, Qhortho tells them all about the Ioun cavern and how it works, including the portal.
- They provide the head of the creature they killed as additional proof.
- They try to give a different Ioun Stone, but they decline.
- They agree that if the Ioun Stone is real, they will accept all of what they say as true and release the prisoner.
- They find the Ioun Stone to work better than ever and release Grand.
- After his release, they speak with Grand and find he has an extensive arm tattoo of various symbols of woodland creatures and geometric shapes.
- He got these as “badges” for completing specific tasks for his people.
- “Thank you… thank you so much for freeing me. I… I don’t know how long I could have survived like that. I’ve been shivering non-stop, my fingers and toes are numb, and I can barely feel my face. I’ve been so hungry and thirsty that I’ve started eating snow and ice to keep myself going. But… but now I’m free, and I can finally go home. Thank you… thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will always be in your debt.”
- He mentions that his tribe is at the mouth of a river, south of where the Antler River meets the shoreline.
- Farron can tell these markings resemble those of the nomadic Hornfoot Tribe, but they are farther north. This may be a breakaway faction.
- Farron mentions this and Grand tells him that he is correct and they call themselves the Hornholt Tribe.
- Aran tells him what happened to the Children of the Forest and that the threat of undead is real.
- They leave camp for the north to follow the compass. They are at the edge of their map, so they decide to follow the river and its forks as best they can.
- They teleport to the Skirling Pass cave and go east towards the river.
- 5 days pass
- Day 878
- They arrive at a fork in the river and spend some time deciding which way to go.
- To the left: slightly more aligned with the compass but leads into the mountains, making them think it might be blocked off.
- To the right: leads slightly eastward, but may get them around the mountains.
- Qarzdaq flies directly up 6000 feet, traveling for 10 minutes, allowing him to see almost 100 miles into the distance.
- They decide to go left.
- They arrive at a fork in the river and spend some time deciding which way to go.
- Day 881
- Undead rise from the ground and attack.
- All of the artifacts light.
- Everyone except Farron has a point of exhaustion.
- Day 884
- In the distance, the party sees large shapes to the west near the mountains.
- They do not appear to have seen the party.
- There are large mammoths, bears, giants, ice trolls, and various other strange and dangerous creatures.
- They remember they have a Potion of Clairvoyance. A yellowish liquid with an eyeball bobbing around inside.
- Upon opening it, the eyeball vanishes.
- Farron drinks it and immediately thinks about being within earshot of the creatures.
- He chooses to use Vision as his first act.
- He sees a pile of dead, burned.
- Trolls and giants are digging alongside wildlings to cut large areas of ice and stone.
- The rubble is being piled up as it is discarded. Though it might be to make a barrier, they don’t seem to be interested in arranging the rubble in a particular way.
- He switches to hearing.
- “Focus on this one.”
- “Focus on that one.”
- “This one looks like it’s getting away.”
- Farron realizes wildlings are using the higher mysteries to control these large creatures to do the digging.
- He switches to vision.
- He sees that some of the wildlings are standing and motioning their arms, but some are sitting with their eyes glazed over. He recognizes this as warging.
- He switches back to hearing and reports to the group when he hears one last bit of interesting dialog before the potion wears off:
- “What are we doing here… We’re never going to find it.”
- “We have it on good authority that it lies under the steps of giants. This is the location called the Giant’s Stair. It has to be here.”
- The party thinks they might be looking for the Horn of Winter.
- The compass does not point towards where they are digging.
- They decide the “steps of giants” means “steppes of giants” – or plains before giant trees.
- They continue to follow the river (as well as the compass) until they reach a point where they are faced with a difficult climb.
- They find frozen bodies as they proceed on foot.
- Qarzdaq burns the bodies as they go.
- Day 896
- They reach the other side and find a river.
- They find disturbed snow and Qhortho realizes these are tracks.
- The river here heads a different direction than the compass, but the large mountains on either side forces them to follow the river.
- They find a wildling camp, but being this far north, they are unsure of whether these are one of the cannibalistic tribes.
- That night, Qarzdaq stealth flies over the wilding camp.
- He sees only about 30 people in the camp. Some are children.
- They seem to be training and ferocious. Like they are getting ready for something.
- He flies back and reports to the rest of the party.
- They decide to try teleporting to the other side of the camp, about 2 miles away.
- They set up their tiny hut and just as they are settling down, they hear loud thumping outside.
- They step outside to find:
- 2x Ogre Zombies (glowing blue eyes)
- 2x Dire Trolls
- 3x Wights
- 5x Corporeal Wights (glowing blue eyes)
- This must be what the wildling camp was training for. The party immediately attacks.
- All of the artifacts light up.
- They quickly shatter the enemies with blue eyes.
- IF YOUR ATTACK CRITS WHEN USING A DRAGONGLASS WEAPON ON A CREATURE VULNERABLE TO DRAGONGLASS, ALL CREATURES WITHIN 10 FEET NEED A DEX SAVE OR BE STRUCK BY SHARDS OF THE CREATURE.
- The Dire Trolls, despite their seeming deadness, kept coming back to life until a flask of oil was broken upon them and their bodies ignited. Well, one was disintegrated. That worked too.
- During this fight, Aran was almost taken down as a result of the Dire Trolls, but none of the Assembly fell, and all enemies were vanquished.
- With everyone except Farron at 2 points of Exhaustion, they grab a rock (Mountain-Secluded Wildlings) and Teleport to Greyguard. The intent is to sleep 2 nights, then continue from this point.
- Day 897
- Awake in Greyguard with 1 point of Exhaustion remaining.
